The complex array of planted fields, tunnels and irrigation ponds that constitute today’s operations, make it hard to imagine that the business evolved from the cultivation of a single acre of land, developed by Kath and Andy Joseph in 1968. Andy’s parents, Barbie and Roy, fully supported the new project and whilst Kath and Andy concentrated on developing a wholesale nursery business, they opened a retail department to supply local needs. Barbie began to landscape the 4 acre garden which has since won national acclaim. Kerry, Andy’s sister, further enhanced the reputation of the retail nursery. Her vast fund of knowledge led to today’s availability of information and advice. Sadly, her life was cut short by Motor Neuron Disease in 2006. Dafydd, Kath and Andy’s son, joined the nursery in 1992. Since his arrival, the growing area has tripled in size, increasing staff requirements to its present level of 80. Their efforts have been rewarded by the collection of 3 Chelsea Flower Show medals. Derwen Garden Centre was built in 1997. Its undoubted success lies in providing customers with every possible aspect of the gardening experience. With 160 acres in production, over 5000 varieties of hardy plants and an enthusiastic, knowledgeable staff, the Dingle can supply any planting scheme, large or small, anywhere in Britain.
